Chakras

The entire universe is a manifestation of pure consciousness. Manifesting the universe, this pure consciousness became two poles, Shiva and Shakti, or consciousness and energy. Neither can exist without the other. Consciousness always manifests itself in form, which is identified with the un-manifested consciousness. It is the power to be, but not the power to become or change. The other aspect is energy, which is dynamic, energetic and creative. She is the mother of the universe and it is from her that all forms are born.

Man is a microcosm of the macrocosm. All that is found in the cosmos can be found within each individual. Shakti, the feminine aspect of cosmic energy in the human being is called kundalini.
When Shakti descends to create the human body, it forms seven different energy networks along the Sushumna nadi, which are known as chakras. This Shakti remains in the Mooladhara at the base of spinal cord in its potential form. While pure consciousness, Shiva is situated on the crown of the head. The objective of Kundalini yoga is to awaken this cosmic energy and allow it to ascend through the chakras, psychic centers as consciousness potentials. Then she will unite with Shiva at the crown of the head, which brings ultimate bliss and oneness.  When this stage is attained, transcendence from dualities shiva-shakti, consciousness- energy, male- female is reached.
The word chakra means circle, yet in Tantra, Yoga chakras are the psychic centers that lie along the axis of the spine as potentials of consciousness. The chakras are not situated in the gross body, but in the subtle body.  They control the circulation of prana which permeates the entire body.
