Twice a year when day and night are completely equal, when Shiva, the divine masculine and Shakti, the divine feminine, are in perfect balance, a magical portal of opportunity opens. It is the Equinox that marks the radical change from one season to the other - from winter to summer and from summer to winter. A focal point of flickering cosmic energies in which nature is readjusting and dying to be reborn again as the new version of herself. This time heralds inevitable change and radical transformation and we too, can use this potent window to elevate ourselves into a higher version.
This is why we celebrate Navratri. Hindu mythology helps us to decipher the meaning of this cosmic event for our human lives. Navratri is celebrated in the first 9 days of the beginning of the lunar cycle after the equinoxes (and solstices) and commemorates 9 days of raging battle. It is an epic battle between the Goddess Durga and the evil asura (demon) Mahishasura who had brought darkness over the universe.
Mahishasura is a clever demon assuming various forms, masking darkness and hatred behind charm and trickery, just as our dark sides often have their ways to come disguised. That’s why it can be so difficult to overcome our ignorance. But Durga in her 9 different forms is victorious. She is the leading light of our Navratri Sadhana to help us use the energies of this auspicious time to let go of what harms, hurts and holds us back.
In our Navratri Sadhana, we are consciously using this period for retrospection, rejuvenation and rebirth on all 3 planes. We are invoking the divine creative energy symbolised by the 9 goddesses to cleanse the 9 openings of the physical body, to clear our mind from the 9 evil forces and to awaken and harmonise the 9 chakras. Especially for Tantric Sadhana, Navratri is a precious and powerful window of opportunity to awaken the Shakti Kundalini.
Each day of this 10 days Sadhana, we are invoking another manifestation of the Goddess Durga to work with during the day. We are offering to her through worship, specific mantra chanting and fire ceremony in tantric rituals. And we are working with our own bodies by journeying our energetic centres, each day another chakra, in special Asana practices to release blockages and clear our pathways. We want to create space for this very special flow of energy of this auspicious time to manifest in our being and upgrade ourselves towards the one who we have come to be.
